Gummitwist

"Gummitwist is a game that girls in Germany have been playing for a long time (At least 50 years !) I have heard this game called in America "Chinese Jumprope". All my students from Pre-K through sixth grade love to play (boys and girls!). We usually play it by popular demand during the last day of class in the school year."

Visit Sprachhexen, a site developed for German families living abroad, for instructions and illustrations!

 Glückliches Springen!

Sauter Francais (French Skipping)
Mood:  energetic

Bonjour!

Sauter Français or French Skipping is also known as French Elastics. The game is played with a really long piece of elastic, about 72 inches. (Sound familiar?) Just tie the ends of the elastic together to make a loop.

Two children stand inside the loop so they are stretching it relatively taught around their ankles. A third person performs a series of hops and jumps, chanting appropriate rhymes.

When finished, the height of the elastic is raised to knees, then thighs, then waist.

Start with left foot inside the elastic loop and right foot just outside.

Jump over to to the other side so right foot is inside the loop and left foot is outside.

Rhymes are called during French Skipping and jumps correlate with the counts:

"Chocolate cake, when you bake,
How many minutes will you take?
One, two, three, four."

On ONE: jump up and land with left foot outside the elastic loop and your right foot inside.
On TWO: jump up and land with both feet together inside the elastic loop.
On THREE: jump up and land with both feet outside the elastic loop.
On FOUR: jump up and land sideways to the elastic, with your left foot on top of the back elastic and your right foot ahead (in front) of the front elastic.

If the jumper fails to execute the correct jump their turn is over. Play passes to an ender (elastics holder), who then tries to "out jump" the previous player.

More fun rhymes!

"England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales!
Inside, outside, inside, on!''

"Old Mrs Mason broke her basin
On the way to London Station.
How much did it cost?
One, two, three, four.''

"Charlie Chaplin sat on a pin.
How many inches did it go in?
One, two, three, four.'

Sauter Heureux ! (Happy Jumping!)

Welcome to Happy Jumping!

My name is Sheree.  I am the author of Chinese Jump Rope and the games CD, Chinese Jump Rope YEAH!

I taught physical education for thirteen years.  After earning my Master degree in Counseling in 2000, I have worked with elementary school children as a school counselor for the past ten years.

Imagine having a great time playing with just a simple piece of elastic string!

Chinese Jump Rope is a jumping game popular around the world!

Chinese Jump Rope found me as a child and once again, through my profession as a physical educator.

The game is funny like that, popping up from generation to generation, verbally passed from one to another like a folk tale.

Get your jumping feet ready! Before you know it, you will have so much fun, your feet won't be able to stop hopping, skipping, and jumping!

Hey!   Want more info on CJR?  Feel free to visit my website, Chinese Jump Rope!

Stop by often for CJR tips and tricks!

As always,

Happy Jumping!
